WORK | The Comparison Game
comparison.game.byamygrace.jpg

In the creative industries, I would argue, there is a game we like to play in the grand scheme of life where we make assessments, judgments, and calls to figure out where we land amongst the others.

It happens quietly.

It happens in the moments of scrolling, connecting, colliding, watching…

It happens so quickly that we are not aware of how firmly it is embedded into our thinking.

Recently I have been trying to unearth the roots of comparison from my life.

I would like to say that I am good at it.

Good at keeping my eyes in my own lane and appreciating the lanes of others without the twinge, the raise of heartbeat and the critical disdain.

But that would be a lie.

I am human.

We are all apt to want to join the game that has been lain out for us.

Pick up your token and roll the dice. See where you land.

I’m throwing the dice in the trash.

I’m playing a different game.

I’m playing a game that only I can play. I am the only me on this board, and I can only truly battle with my own inner demons.

Industries, society, cultures will all have their norms, their way of life and rule book.

I just happen to be a bit of a maverick, and I think that’s okay.

I think it’s okay to come into your work and life recognizing that your calling may not be aligning with everyone else. It might be okay that you come into your position with a different background, different passion and angle.

Sure,

I’d love to be the next Elizabeth Gilbert, Glennon Doyle or even...Maya Angelou… but the truth is. I’m not.

I’m Amy Grace, born, raised and deeply anchored in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I think deeply and see movies and words in my head. I arrive at storytelling and writing with the angle of a trained interpreter with a passion for communication and psychology. I spend a lot of my time shooting the breeze with my closest people, listening to podcasts, stopping at random to lay on the floor and cuddle and wrestle my daughter. I get ideas in the shower or while I am moving my body in cardio or dance. I write them down with either water or sweat dripping down my face. I value quality time with others and would always prefer to either being quietly reflecting or deeply discussing.

I feel deeply called to develop projects that move people. Make people think, ponder and mull over things in their heads.

Sometimes this means…I create less than I want to. Other times this means I am neck deep in ideas, projects and meetings I don’t know what to do with myself.

But the point of this is.

I cannot and should not be the next Shonda Rhimes, Marie Forleo, Sarah Polley or Chriselle Lim.

I'm throwing in the dice.byamygrace.quote.jpg

What I can do,

is be me.

Who are you?

What are you about?

What is that thing that makes you arresting to yourself and those around you?

Because you are. You make me weak in the knees when you show up as yourself.

I want more of you.

All of you.

We all do.

Despite the games we all habitually find ourselves playing from time to time, we are all our best and highest selves when playing for ourselves and ultimately the One who gave us all these thoughts, ideas and dreams to begin with..

Rebecca MacDonald

Real Estate Agent

Rebecca ‘end goal’ was to become a real estate agent. With the awareness that there were going to be barriers due to her young age, at the time, and the constant ups and downs of the housing market, Rebecca grew other skill sets (graduating as an American Sign Language Interpreter) while also keeping real estate as something to study and grow into.

When asked about her values in the work she does, for Rebecca it all comes down to honesty. She treats her clients like family members and says she remains transparent for them. She recognizes that she is able to observe and take note of her clients values, long and short term goals. She looks for her them to be excited and at peace with their decisions.

What it all comes down to for Rebecca:

She protects her clients interests like she would her own.

WORK | WIFT-AT Prep for Women Making Waves 2020
wift-at.byamygrace.2020

Women in Film and Television Atlantic's Women Making Waves conference is fast approaching.

Not only does the conference land on the weekend leading up to International Women's Day, but it's also the association's tenth anniversary.

Women Making Waves is special to me.

It's where I saw, felt and heard that writing for the film and television industry is possible. I have started describing my experience with WIFT-AT akin to an open door. I wasn't aware that it was there, but when I found it and attempted to step in, there was an instant acceptance and making room for the new. This conference also does this. It brings top-level professionals to the Maritimes and seeks to create unity, growth and conversation to the women who work here. For me, it succeeds every time.

In the lead up to this conference, everyone has been busy at work to prepare.

Especially the WIFT-AT executive board members. For myself, I have been advance interviewing a handful of the women flying in to give talks and workshops, seeking out silent auction donations, and committing to 'hosting/facilitating' different sessions.

During one of my recent interviews, it was pointed out to me how miraculous WIFT-AT is as an association. With only one paid staff, spanning and providing opportunities for four provinces, a yearly conference, a five-week crash course on the industry, and so much else, all for women in the film and television industry.

I have to admit,

I am proud to be serving on the board. To have a chance to find my place in the association, meet and interview the women who make our industry thrive and to learn as I go. It's an honour to be alongside these women who serve on the board, have created WIFT-AT to be what it is today and to continue to find my place in it.

LIFESTYLE | Valentines Day 2019
IMG_7516.JPG

Over the years Jeremy & I have enjoyed giving these boards as wedding presents. Watershed Wood Designs is a local business that creates beautiful pieces with laser etching.

Every time we buy a board for a married-couple-to-be we are more than a bit envious, which led us to use this valentines as the excuse to buy one for ourselves!

*insert #happyasclams <—- need I say more?

For us, living on the coast (Bedford Basin) & calling our little home “Little Shore Loft”, this sailboat design was all too fitting.

Here is how we used our board for the first time:

Various cheeses we found at Petes Frootique in Bedford, along with a few truffles from Newfoundland Chocolate
